What Happens When You Follow the Whisper

How one quiet nudge and a whole lot of heart grew into a community I never could’ve planned for.

In my work with moms every day, one of the things I’m asked often is how I started Here We Grow - when I made the leap from my former career(s), and how I’ve managed to balance motherhood and meaningful work along the way. I love these conversations because I see so many moms standing right where I once stood - curious, inspired, and wondering what might be next for them.

The other day, I caught myself saying that I’m an “accidental entrepreneur.” And honestly? The second I said it, I wanted to take it back. Because the truth is… none of this was accidental.

When I look back over the past 13 years since starting HWG, I can see the seeds I planted -  sometimes without even realizing how deeply they’d grow. No, I didn’t have a 5 or 10-year business plan when I started, but I did have a vision (one that’s still growing and changing), an open heart, and a real desire to connect with others doing this work.

And here we are - Here We Grow!

This chapter of my life really began when I became a mom. Before kids, I was a middle school theater teacher turned professional producer. Then, after having my own babies, my whole world shifted. I found myself drawn to supporting families - becoming a doula, a childbirth educator, a postpartum support group and family music circle facilitator.

I can still remember sitting in the 12-week childbirth class my husband and I took when I was pregnant with our first baby nearly 17 years ago. Somewhere between the birth videos, breathing exercises, and an incredibly inspiring teacher, I turned to him and whispered, “I’m going to do this work or something like it one day.” That was my first nudge, though I didn’t know it yet.

Becoming a mother has a way of rearranging us - our identities, our purpose, and our sense of what really matters in this life. For me, that transformation became the root of everything that followed.

All of those experiences, all those hats - have woven themselves into what Here We Grow is today.

And for any mama reading this who’s feeling that pull toward something new - maybe a career shift, maybe a business idea that keeps whispering to you - I just want to say…I see you. That whisper deserves your attention. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t need a 5-year plan. Start small. Take one class. Have one conversation. Say “yes” to something that sparks your curiosity. For me, that one small step - saying yes to supporting one family, then another - grew into an entirely new path, a third career, and a community that I am endlessly grateful for.

As the air gets cooler and the colors around us deepen, I’m reminded that fall is such a beautiful season of reflection - of noticing what’s grown, what’s changing, and what’s ready to be planted next.

Here’s to new beginnings, quiet courage, and trusting that the seeds we nurture now will bloom in their own perfect time.

If you’ve felt that whisper or found yourself in a season of change, I’d love to hear about it. Hit reply and tell me what’s stirring in you - I’d be so honored to cheer you on.
